The New Orleans Saints have moved past the frenzy of March free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft.  The squad has shifted their focus toward evaluating a reshaped roster and building chemistry ahead of the upcoming season.

Although most of the major roster moves are complete, the Saints still have a noticeable gap on the defensive side of the ball.  The edge rusher position remains a pressing need that wasn’t significantly addressed during free agency or the 2026 NFL Draft.  Although they just traded for former 2023 first round pick Tyree Wilson and signed Anfernee Jennings, those moves don't significantly move the needle.

With this need still on the roster, there are a few remaining free-agent options at the position that are available and could immediately elevate the Saints defense.  Adding one of those impact players could help stabilize the key weakness left unaddressed in free agency and the draft.

Bosa’s familiarity with Brandon Staley could spark ideal fit

Joey Bosa remains one of the top edge rushers still available in free agency.  While his peak years are behind him, he should come relatively cheap at this stage of the market and could still offer New Orleans valuable rotational depth.  He played in 15 games during the 2025 campaign, finishing with 5.5 sacks while leading the league in forced fumbles with five.

Bosa hasn’t posted double digit sacks since 2021, when his defensive coordinator was Brandon Staley. That familiarity with the system is an added bonus as the Saints evaluate his potential fit.  At this stage in his career, Bosa is likely seeking a Super Bowl contender.  While the Saints aren’t quite there just yet, their improved roster and his familiarity with Staley’s scheme could still make New Orleans a realistic and intriguing option.

Jadeveon Clowney still has plenty left in the tank

Jadeveon Clowney is still one of the more intriguing veteran edge options on the market, especially coming off one of his midterms efficient seasons.  He posted 8.5 sacks in just 13 games with the Dallas Cowboys, proving he can still be a productive pass rusher when healthy.

Clowney showed that he still has plenty left in the tank, using his power and versatility at a high level.  While he doesn’t have familiarity with the current coaching staff, his experience in both a 4-3 and 3-4 defensive scheme makes him a seamless fit in New Orleans.
