Cameron Jordan is one of the greatest players in New Orleans Saints history. He has been a franchise cornerstone ever since being drafted in 2011. Despite his consistent play, all things must come to an end. Eventually, the Saints will have to find his replacement. Luckily for them, they have an outstanding option in the 2026 NFL Draft with Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr.
There’s speculation that Jordan will retire this offseason, however, nothing’s certain. The 36 year old is still producing with 2.5 sacks and four tackles for loss this year. He will have a major choice to make this offseason.
The Saints should still invest in the defensive line regardless of Jordan’s decision. The group has been questionable outside of Carl Granderson. Bringing in Bain to bolster the group and develop would be wise.
Reuben Bain will bring a dominating presence to the Saints defensive line
The Heisman trophy is normally an offensive award, however, Bain should be in the discussion for it. His sack and tackle for a loss number doesn't reflect it, but he has been a constant force around the quarterback this season.
Bain’s go-to pass rush move is speed around the outside. He has an outstanding first step and elite bend around the edge. It’s difficult for the lineman to get hands on him before reaching the quarterback. He excels at this, but can also win in so many other ways. He has great technique and a variety of moves he can use. Bain always keeps the lineman guessing. This makes it nearly impossible to gameplan for him.
Bain is relentless against the run. It’s necessary to double-team him or he will throw the blocker aside to make the tackle. He’s even been able to shoot the gaps and penetrate the backfield immediately to make the play. Once Bain gets his hands on the rusher, the play’s over. It’s unlikely the runner will break free.
Bain’s physicality and technique is spectacular, but his most intriguing quality might be his mindset. He embodies the villain mentality. Bain wants to be a menace on the field, ruin the opposition's game plan. This energy can be seen in his preparation, through interviews, and on the field. It’s the exact mentality that’s desired in a dominant edge rusher.
Cameron Jordan’s legendary career is winding down in New Orleans, it’s time to start trying to find his replacement. Luckily for the Saints, they have a perfect option in next year’s draft with Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. He could be the premier pass rusher for years to come in the Big Easy.
