Saints' best Tyler Shough running mate in 2026 NFL Draft is painfully obvious

The New Orleans Saints have identified Tyler Shough as their next franchise quarterback. They hoped it would be case when they picked him in the second round a year ago, and after his rookie year, they clearly believe he is on his way to becoming that quarterback. The proof is in the free agency pudding. Drafting Jordyn Tyson in the first round would truly surround Shough with a litany of weapons.

Ideally, you'd want to be confident your top-three receivers. The team is seemingly high on Ja'Lynn Polk, but he's yet to take a snap for the Saints and missed the entire 2025 campaign due to injury. You can't pass on Tyson on accord of Polk. The Arizona State product would give Shough another high upside player to target alongside Chris Olave and Devaughn Vele. Best case scenario, Polk also pops and the Saints have four wide receivers who can carve up the defense.

The only question is the health. Tyson is currently dealing with a hamstring injury and has a history of injuries before that. He's holding a private workout for teams this week to show his hamstring is healed. The Saints also hosted Tyson to get an intimate look at him. If the medicals clear, he'll be more than worth the pick at 8.

Jordyn Tyson has knack for showing up in big games

ESPN’s Field Yates laid out Tyson’s performance against ranked opponents over the last two seasons, and it’s everything you want from the first receiver off the board. Tyson recorded more than 100 yards against all but one team and scored at least 1 touchdown against all but one team.

How you perform against the best is always the stick we measure the best players by. Big time players should also be expected to rise to the big moments. Big moments don’t have to come against the best teams in the country. Sometimes it looks like scoring a touchdown to tie the game in the 4th quarter versus Mississippi State.

Arizona State was down 17 points vs TCU, and Tyson kickstarted the comeback with a 57 yard touchdown that he made look easy. His second touchdown of the day tied the game at an improbable time. It was fourth down and goal. Everyone knew the ball was going to Tyson, down a touchdown, but he still made more than enough room on a slant to give Same Leavitt an easy target.

The ability to rise when pressure is at it's highest, whether it's a moment or an entire game, stands out. He may not go for 100 yards against the Seahawks immediately, but it shows Tyson has the right mental makeup you want.
