Quarterback Brendan Sorsby made headlines this offseason with his controversial court case, resulting in him declaring for the 2026 Supplemental Draft on Monday, June 15. Sorsby is hosting a Pro Day in mid July, and all 32 teams are expected to be there even the New Orleans Saints. And they're right to evaluate. Nobody will poach Tyler Shough’s job, however, it could become important as one division rival could make a run at the dynamic signal caller.
The supplemental draft will be held before training camp, meaning mid-to-late July. Teams “bid” on the players with a certain round 2027 draft picks in this event. Contrary to the draft in April, this is a blind bidding event where teams won’t know what others did. Then, it’s just the highest price wins. For the Saints, this isn’t important. It’s highly unlikely they even auction a seventh round pick, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have a different mindset.
The Buccaneers are the prime dark-horse contender for Sorsby. Most of the teams mentioned as possible targets for him have dire needs at quarterbacks, but GM John Lynch’s team doesn’t. Veteran Baker Mayfield has been a quality starter, but may not be in their future plans.
Brendan Sorsby could be the Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield replacement.
Sorsby wouldn’t contend for Mayfield’s job in year one, but he could be the long-term answer. The veteran hasn’t led the Buccaneers far into the post-season and is in the last year of a hefty three-year, $100 million contract that the Buccaneers could be looking to eliminate from the books. As a result, it would make sense to invest capital in Sorsby and stash him until he develops into their starter.
For the Saints, this would mean facing an explosive quarterback with elite mobility who thrives at improvising and extending plays, something they’ve struggled to contain in recent years, twice per season. He still needs development in his processing and poise under pressure, but he has the tools to eventually be a threatening player for the Saints.
Obviously, it’s far too early to say anything definitive, but Brendan Sorsby could be a long-term obstacle for the Saints if the Buccaneers add him in the supplemental draft. He could be Baker Mayfield’s replacement and the future signal caller for Tampa Bay.
