With Derek Carr out of the picture, the New Orleans Saints quarterbacks have a combined zero combined career victories. Part of that is circumstance, but the stat does a good job depicting the overall lack of experience.
Saints quarterbacks W-L record
Tyler Shough: rookie
Shough hasn’t taken a snap in the NFL, so no record for him.
Spencer Rattler: 0-6
Rattler has the largest sample size of the bunch. Starting six games and winning none of them is concerning, on the surface, but it isn’t as bad contextually. He didn’t have a lot of help around him and was thrust into a situation set up for him to lose.
Rattler’s biggest issue as a rookie was consistency. He's put together good halves of football but never an entire game of quality play. It was enough to create intrigue and excitement. Circumstances may have made consistency more difficult, but he’ll need more balance in Year 2 to win the job and win a game.
Jake Haener: 0-1
Haener looked much better in relief duty than he did as a starter. This was likely due to defense being more relaxed when he entered the game. The Saints were already out of it by the time Haener would enter. Also, teams game planned for him.
Haener suffered from the same roster restrictions Rattler ran into, which is important to note. However, Haener wasn't and isn't seen as a potential starting quarterback by many, so his struggles are viewed as confirmation rather than a product of inexperience and circumstance.
Saints should add a veteran to the QB room
Haener is the elder of the Saints quarterback room. He's older than Shough by half a year, and has been in the league for the longest amount. Haener may technically be the most veteran player in the room, but he is far from a true veteran.
Haener, Rattler and Shough have no wins and three seasons under their belt. Keeping the room as is would make the Saints easily the most inexperienced group of quarterbacks in the NFL Whoever wins that battle would benefit from having an older quarterback to help them navigate their first year as a starting quarterback.
Adding a veteran would likely spell the end of Haener's tenure with the Saints. He's currently third in the rotation, and it's unlikely the Saints keep four quarterbacks. Unless he outperforms Rattler in training camp, adding a veteran for mentorship purposes would push Haener out.
