The New Orleans Saints are bringing in former Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff as a consultant, per The Monday Morning Quarterback's Albert Breer . He held that position for 13 seasons from 2008 to 2020, so the Saints are very familiar with Dimitroff and his work. The Saints now have the Falcons' former general manager as an advisor, and the Falcons have a member of the Saints
Dimitroff comes to New Orleans with Super Bowl winning experience. Obviously, he didn't gain that experience with the Falcons. Earlier in his career, Dimitroff won two Super Bowls with the New England Patriots as the director of college scouting
While with Atlanta, Dimitroff drafted his quarterback of the future in his first draft. We have our jokes about Matt Ryan, but that's a pretty solid first pick. Dimitroff's other career highlight is the Julio Jones trade. He was extremely aggressive to get his guy, and he got him. Then, it worked out. Dimitroff can also bring wisdom from some of his misses too.
Saints continue their trend of bringing in former general managers
Adding former general managers has become a regular occurrence for the Saints lately. A year ago, they hired Dave Ziegler, former general manager of the Las Vegas Raiders, as an advisor. Ziegler was scooped up by the Tennessee Titans this offseason.
The Saints have two notable ex-general managers on their staff currently, Jeff Ireland and Randy Mueller. Ireland is the assistant general manager, and Mueller is the senior personnel advisor.
The Saints are just now hiring Dimitroff, but it appears this has been bubbling throughout the offseason. NewOrleans.Football's Mike Triplett revealed Dimitroff had been around the Saints a lot throughout the offseason.
Not only was Dimitroff present for the Saints practices in Louisiana, he also made the trip to California as well. If that was an audition, he clearly was fit for the role. He'll be advising Loomis on a variety of topics, and his experience should earn him some references.
Bringing in fresh voices is good, because it pushes the norm. The norm hasn't worked for the Saints recently, so bringing in someone who thinks differently was necessary. That guy came in the form of Thomas Dimitroff.
