The New Orleans Saints have agreed to a restructured deal with veteran running back Alvin Kamara to retain him for 2026. This move sets up a dangerous tandem in the Saints’ backfield with Kamara and Travis Etienne Jr. Together, they will form a dynamic rushing attack whose explosiveness will create a constant big-play threat for opposing defenses.

Many of the Saints’ premier rushing attacks have been anchored by a pair of running backs. Think of Boom and Zoom in with Mark Ingram and Kamara, Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush, or even Kamara and Latavius Murray briefly. All of these pairings have been valuable weapons for an offense and have contributed to some of the Saints’ most illustrious offenses.

Having a duo of running backs is pivotal for the success of an offense. It always allows fresh legs to be available and helps the offense adapt to a defensive look. For instance, having someone who thrives as a pass catcher or has blazing speed can be used differently from a prototypical power back. Kellen Moore finding this is key to unlocking his offense and dissecting opposing defenses.

Alvin Kamara and Travis Etienne will be a dynamic duo, but in a different way than the past examples.

The Saints’ previous rushing tandems have all followed a similar archetype: an explosive threat and a short-yardage, power back. This is the most common pairing and works well, but it isn’t the only option. Kamara and Etienne are both dynamic players who thrive in space and can contribute in a variety of ways. Because of this, it eliminates tendencies from an offense and always threatens the defense.

The Saints’ offense has missed this in recent seasons. Their backfield has been stagnant when Kamara’s been injured/on the bench, which hindered them. Now, this won’t be a problem. It allows them to consistently have a dynamic option who can burn a defense as a rusher and receiver.

Bringing Alvin Kamara back was a needed move that will elevate the Saints’ offense. Their new tandem of Kamara and Travis Etienne Jr. will be among the most explosive in the NFL and help their offense consistently threaten opposing defenses. It could just be the difference between winning and losing games.
