The New Orleans Saints could be getting a big boost in their pass rush this week, in their home matchup against the New England Patriots. Chase Young returned to practice for the first time this season and will make his season debut.
Young missed the start of the 2025 season due to a calf injury that he suffered in practice back in early September. Initially listed as week to week, there was optimism that he’d make his debut sometime within the first quarter of the season. However the recovery process took longer than expected, causing him to miss the first five games.
The Saints have been solid but not spectacular at generating pressure this season, currently ranking 15th in the league in sacks per game. While the pass rush has held its own, Young could provide the spark needed to elevate the unit to another level.
Chase Young returns to boost Saints surging defense
Young is coming off of a satisfactory 2024 campaign where he recorded 5.5 sacks. While the sack total may not be eye popping, he still found ways to be disruptive. He totaled 66 pressures, 7th in the league and 47 hurries which ranked 5th. The organization was encouraged by his performance and believe that Young can grow into a Pro Bowl caliber player. As a result, the Saints rewarded him with a 3 year $51 million extension.
The Saints have shifted over into a 3-4 defensive system and have adjusted pretty well through the first 5 games of the season. This will allow Young to use his athleticism and explosiveness to win one on one matchups with offensive tackles. He will be able to play in more space and maximize his ability to get after the quarterback. His return could open up more opportunities for Carl Granderson who is currently tied for 7th in sacks with 4.5.
Coming off of a performance in which the defense forced turnovers on 5 straight possessions, the Saints are extremely thrilled to add him to a unit that is firing on all cylinders. With momentum on their side, his return could be the final piece that takes them from average to really good.
