The Saints wrapped up their preseason with a 28-19 loss against the Denver Broncos. Although they couldn’t achieve their first win, some young players stood out. In the end, the final score of a preseason game doesn’t matter. What’s more important is the development of players, which the Saints have seen. Rejzohn Wright, in particular, had a timely, good performance ahead of roster cuts.
Everyone will be talking about the uncertainty around the quarterback battle, but these three players stood out and deserve to be noticed. They each played well in their final opportunity to secure a roster spot or a higher spot on the depth chart prior to the regular season.
It’s worth noting a couple honorable mentions who just missed the list. Rookie cornerback Quincy Riley had an excellent day that was highlighted by an interception. Second year defensive lineman Khristian Boyd also popped off the screen on a couple of plays.
The three players whose stock rose the most after week three of the preseason
Rejzohn Wright
It was impossible to watch the game and not notice Rejzohn Wright. He ended the game with nine total tackles and pass deflection. The deflection was his best play, he got beat off the line but didn’t panic and made an amazing play to swat the ball away with one hand. This game was crucial for Wright as he’s in a fierce battle for a roster spot. He did all that he can, now it’s waiting to see if it was enough.
Blake Grupe
Blake Grupe had an outstanding game, which can extend to his entire offseason performance. Grupe was 3/3 today with a long of 56 yards. He already had the kicker battle locked up going into week three, but his showing showed that he can be one of the best kickers in the NFL. It’s fitting Grupe played this well against the Broncos as their kicker is Will Lutz, the player he replaced. The Saints should be feeling ecstatic about Blake Grupe being their starting kicker going into 2025.
Vernon Broughton
A lot of Saints fans weren’t happy when they spent a third round pick on Texas defensive tackle Vernon Broughton. He didn’t have an excellent offseason, he was fairly quiet throughout training camp and the prior preseason games.
That all changed on Saturday. Broughton showed off how dynamic he can be. His impact won’t be fully shown on the stat sheet but he had a marvelous game. He totaled two quarterback hits on the day and made multiple plays in the run game. Saints fans should be feeling much better about the rookie after this game.
