Staying composed is a key trait of successful NFL teams and is something that the New Orleans Saints must exercise in their week three matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. It’s vital that Kellen Moore’s squad stays level-headed and doesn’t look towards the future, where season-defining matchups await. They must capitalize on their current momentum and seize a winning record.
It’s no secret; the Saints have had a wild first two weeks. They had an overtime loss to the Detroit Lions in week one, where they nearly overcame a 21-point second-half deficit. Then, they mounted another fourth-quarter comeback to upset the Baltimore Ravens. As a result, they sit at an optimistic 1-1, and expectations are beginning to mount.
Looking ahead, the Saints have a Monday Night Football matchup against the Atlanta Falcons in week four that marks the 20th anniversary of their return to the dome. It’s easy to fast-forward through the Raiders game, who, although they are 2-0, still aren’t viewed highly. However, this would be a detrimental mistake and blunder by Kellen Moore.
The Raiders are a talented team that can test the Saints.
Raiders head coach and former New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has a talented team. Ashton Jeanty and Brock Bowers (questionable) highlight an efficient offense, and Maxx Crosby leads an underrated defense.
As a result, the Raiders are undefeated to start the season. The jury is still out on Las Vegas, however. The Miami Dolphins aren't a good team, and despite what we may have thought about the Los Angeles Chargers, they don't look like one right now either.
This game is kind of a prove it moment for the Raiders. Regardless, it’s impressive, and they've looked dangerous in both games, largely because of Kirk Cousins’ play and their effective passing attack
Having a capable veteran quarterback and a dynamic running back in Ashton Jeanty is a recipe for success. Cousins isn’t a game-changer, but he ran Kubiak’s offense well and got the ball to their weapons. Additionally, Bowers hasn’t played yet and will be a massive piece returning for them soon.
Don’t get it twisted, the Saints are still the favorites, but this game could be closer than anticipated. Tyler Shough has looked outstanding early, but he’s still a young quarterback. One defensive look could throw him off, and that could make the offense flounder.
With this in mind, the Saints must be cautious of a trap game in week three. Although they are riding high, all of that can come crashing down quickly. It’s pivotal that Kellen Moore doesn’t overlook them and has the Saints ready for another battle.
