Proposed trade could quietly end Alvin Kamara’s Saints run

Would this trade make sense for the Saints?

The New Orleans Saints took the first step toward a potential parting of ways from Alvin Kamara this offseason by signing Travis Etienne in free agency. Etienne's addition to the Saints' offense means that Kamara, while a Saints legend, could be expendable.

In a recent trade proposal by Justin Carter of FanSided, the Saints ship Kamara to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

"New Orleans added Etienne this offseason, giving them a high-upside starter at running back. Keeping Kamara around as a backup isn't the worst idea, but the team also has a lot of other talented backs on the roster: Devin Neal, Kendre Miller, Audric Estimé, Ty Chandler. Yeah, those guys aren't prime Kamara, but Kamara also isn't prime Kamara," Carter wrote. "Barring an Etienne injury that forces the team to use its backup running backs more, trading away Kamara likely doesn't hurt too much right now, and it also gives you an additional asset for 2027 that can help continue to build out this ascending roster."

Alvin Kamara linked to Packers in recent trade proposal

Only getting a fifth-round pick would be a bummer, espcially for a legend like Kamara, but, at the same time, he's a soon-to-be 31-year-old running back who isn't in his prime anymore. And as Carter mentioned, the Saints have depth behind Etienne if they don't keep Kamara around.

As for why the Packers make sense as a landing spot, Josh Jacobs was arrested earlier in the offseason and, while he's still practicing, he could end up missing time as punishment. Kamara would give Green Bay's backfield better depth than what they currently have behind Jacobs should he end up missing an extended period of time.

Carter wrote that Kamara would not only give Green Bay depth in the backfield but that he'd give Jordan Love something he hasn't had during his career - a running back with pass-catching abilities. Kamara is incredible both at running the ball and catching it, tallying nearly 1,500 scrimmage yards in the 2024 season.

It makes sense why the Packers would be interested in this proposed deal and if they only had to give up a fifth-round pick for Kamara, that'd be a big win for them. The Saints might not get a ton back in return but the Day 3 selection would give them ammo for next year's draft as they continue to build their team around Tyler Shough.
