Despite losing, there are positive takeaways from the New Orleans Saints first preseason game against the Chargers, especially on the defensive side. There was an attempt to take standout players from both sides of the ball, but the defenders were the ones making the most consistent plays.
With many eyes were on the quarterback battle, there may be an air of pessimism around the game. That shouldn't be taken as an indication of the entire game. Three players stood out above the rest and made the most of their opportunity.
These defenders are amidst position battles and facing roster cuts so a great performance can elevate them to a spot on the 53 man roster, though two of our top performers may be competing against each other for the last spot in their position room.. Here are the three players whose stock is rising after the Saints preseason matchup against the Chargers.
Saints players who rose their stock
Fadil Diggs
The Saints seventh round pick had a strong performance against the Chargers. Diggs backed up multiple impressive training camp performances with a great showing. He racked up one sack and two tackles for loss but his hustle and agility is what set him apart. Diggs can be seen going all out, full speed to the ball on every play. He was constantly applying pressure to the quarterback. This is exactly what’s desired out of a rookie in the preseason.
Diggs is receiving lots of praise opposed to Isaiah Foskey. Him and Foskey are likely competing for a roster spot so their preseason performances are crucial. Diggs is doing everything he can to make the roster. Undoubtedly, his performance helped his chances.
Isaiah Stalbird
One of the linebackers needed to step up, that player was Isaiah Stalbird. Stalbird was second on the team with seven tackles, also reeling in a tackle for loss. He impressed not just in the run game, but also blitzing the quarterback and in coverage. Stalbird’s experience as a former safety was evident, flying around the field making plays.
Stalbird’s impressive performance amidst this fierce linebacker battle greatly improves his position. Danny Stutsman and Jaylan Ford had good days but not like Stalbird. He can make a push for the backup linebacker if he produces similarly the next two weeks.
Chris Rumph
Chris Rumph was a new addition to the Saints this offseason. He has experience with Brandon Staley so he was expected to make an impact. He delivered on those expectations today. Rumph tallied a sack and a quarterback hit.
Besides being dynamic rushing the passer, Rumph was effective while defending the run. He played a key role in stopping the Chargers rush on their two point conversion. Rumph hasn’t been talked about much during training camp but he’s certainly making a name for himself now.
