Saints draft target No. 2: Brian Branch, DB, Alabama

Right now, the New Orleans Saints have two very good safeties on their roster in Marcus Maye and Tyrann Mathieu. However, Mathieu is already over the age of 30, so he might not be around a whole lot longer.

With that in mind, Brian Branch would be an ideal target for them at No. 29. Not only would he be able to take over for Mathieu one day (saving New Orleans a chunk of change in the process) but he would also be able to get on the field with their current safeties and contribute from day one.

Branch, who was a star at Alabama, isn't someone who can be pigeon-holed to one spot. He can play both single-high and in the box but was also the primary nickel corner for the Crimson Tide. His versatility is actually reminiscent of C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who played all over the secondary for New Orleans before being traded to the Eagles last season.

Entering the draft, Branch is regarded by many as the top safety in the class but he's also being considered a true cornerback. Whatever role he ends up playing, he's a chess piece on defense and feels like a surefire starter that will make whichever team he lands with very happy.
