Derek Carr is back for his second season with the New Orleans Saints, and it’s an important year for him. The Saints are entering a make-or-break year, leaving head coach Dennis Allen and quarterback Derek Carr under a lot of pressure. However, Carr isn’t the New Orleans quarterback that fans are talking about; that would be Spencer Rattler.

Drafted in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the rookie quarterback already has a ton of supporters in the Saints fan base, with plenty of people excited about his future in the league. Rattler is a talented quarterback, that was once believed to be a No. 1-overall pick, but a rocky college career resulted in him being drafted in the fifth round, and the sixth quarterback taken in the draft.

However, if he can tap into the potential that everyone projected for him, he’ll end up being an all-time great draft selection for New Orleans. Kristopher Knox detailed that in a recent Bleacher Report piece, highlighting overlooked additions of the 2024 NFL offseason.

"It shouldn't be a total shock if he goes on to have a better NFL career than some of the quarterbacks drafted ahead of him, though."

Spencer Rattler could develop into an elite quarterback for Saints

Several analysts have praised the selection of Rattler, arguing that he’s very capable of being a starter in this league. The young quarterback flashed pro-QB skills throughout college, it’s just a matter of being consistent and continuing to develop. He’ll have that opportunity with the Saints, currently sitting behind Derek Carr.

For now, Rattler is competing with second-year quarterback Jake Haener for the QB2 spot in New Orleans. Haener put together a really good spring, and will likely enter training camp with the advantage. However, Rattler’s career is just getting started, and there are a ton of possibilities ahead for him.
