Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler is in the middle of an important training camp with the New Orleans Saints. For starters, it’s Rattler’s first camp in the NFL. Additionally, he’s in a battle with second-year quarterback Jake Haener for the backup QB spot in New Orleans.

As Rattler fights for his spot on the roster and the depth chart, he has quickly learned an important lesson: have a go-to receiver that you trust to come down with the ball. Speaking with the media on Monday, Rattler revealed Chris Olave has quickly become his favorite target.

When asked about the third-year receiver, Rattler smiled and said Olave is different, expressing how impressed he is with him. The rookie quarterback went on to explain that whenever the two are on the field together, Rattler has a simple rule: get Olave the ball.

Rattler is learning what Saints fans have seen for two years now. Olave started his career with 72 receptions for 1,042 yards and four touchdowns, and improved those numbers to 87 receptions for 1,123 yards and five touchdowns in year two. He quickly established himself as a good receiver, and now he’s being asked to take things to another level.

On Olave’s journey to do that, he isn’t just Rattler’s favorite target; he’s everyone’s. In Monday’s practice, starting quarterback Derek Carr completed 10 passes— six of those passes were to Olave. He has fully taken on the challenge of becoming an elite receiver in this league and it’s showing.

New Orleans needs that to continue into the regular season, as Olave is the unquestioned No. 1 receiver for the Saints. With a young, unproven receiver room, the team really needs him to set the tone for the offense. As long as he’s delivering, it won’t matter if it’s Rattler, Carr, or Haener at quarterback, the plan will be to get Olave the ball.
