Sean Payton is Broncos' top candidate for next head coach
New Orleans Saints fans are going to be sick of the Sean Payton rumors this offseason because they're already forming at an obnoxious rate. The next bit of buzz we heard is that Adam Schefter said the Denver Broncos are interested in the former Saints head coach.
Per Sayre Bedinger on Twitter (who quoted Schefter from his appearance on ESPN on Sunday morning), Schefter said that Payton is expected to be the Broncos' leading candidate and that Denver is aware it'll be difficult to get him. The Broncos are not an attractive job right now due to a lot of their money being invested in Russell Wilson and we've seen how little Wilson has been able to cook this year.
Trading for Wilson was a popular idea from Saints fans last offseason and that was when Payton was still the head coach. If anyone could turn things around for Wilson, it'd be Payton.
Could Sean Payton really end up in Denver?
The Broncos don't own their top 5 pick because they traded it to Seattle but they do have a later first-round pick courtesy of the Dolphins (and it originally belonged to San Francisco initially so it'll be a late first-rounder for sure). This is something that also works against them, as they don't have an early first-round pick to land the former Saints coach. If a team like, say, the Cardinals is interested, they have a higher chance of getting Payton because their pick is higher.
The Broncos were said to be aggressive in finding their next head coach and it's noted that money won't be the issue for them here. The issue, however, will likely be in getting the right draft compensation in exchange for Payton. We can't have another trade like what happened with the Eagles TWICE last offseason.
What do you think, Saints fans? Do you think the Broncos are a legitimate contender to trade for Sean Payton?
