Tuesday evening, the New Orleans Saints made another under-the-radar move, re-signing defensive back Ugo Amadi to a one-year deal. Amadi joined the Saints last offseason in free agency and he’s coming back for another year. This will restore a sense of stability to the career of a young player who has bounced around the league.

After being drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Amadi spent his first three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. After being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022, things started to get rocky for Amadi. In the 2022 season alone, he spent time on the practice squads of the Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, and on the Tennessee Titans roster.

After that year of bouncing around, he found his way to New Orleans and that’s where he’s signed up to stay for at least another season.

Saints re-sign DB Ugo Amadi

In year one with New Orleans, Amadi played a role on special teams, and he will likely do that again in 2024. He was also a depth defensive back, playing in the slot last season in limited snaps. Going into next season, Amadi could see his defensive presence increase for the Saints.

He’s shown the ability to play in the slot, but he’s listed as a safety. Either way, New Orleans desperately needs defensive back depth and that’s why Ugo Amadi’s role could increase. The Saints have released Marcus Maye, and lost Lonnie Johnson Jr. and Isaac Yiadom in free agency. So currently, Amadi is listed as the second free safety on the depth chart behind veteran Tyrann Mathieu.

New Orleans will definitely add some depth to their secondary, but the veteran Ugo Amadi is set up either way to compete and be a part of the defensive rotation in 2024.
