Saints players who are already turning heads at training camp
The New Orleans Saints have been on the practice field for less than a week during 2024 training camp, but that is more than enough time for players to make some noise. Between the opening days, when players were just in helmets, to the last couple of days in pads, some players have disappointed, but others have stood out.
Let’s take a look at three players that have already stood out for New Orleans in training camp.
Chase Young has turned heads at training camp
Chase Young was the big free agency signing for the Saints this offseason but his tenure with the team got off to a slow start after undergoing a neck surgery shortly after signing. Young passed his physical before training camp, but still saw an on-field ramp-up process during practices.
However, on the first day of pads, Young was suited and on the field competing. Working with the second unit, the 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year dominated the second-team offensive line. He continued to dominate on day two, against all units, as his reps increased, and he was seemingly everywhere.
He certainly appears to be well on his way back to the quality edge defender New Orleans hoped it was getting.
Pete Werner has turned heads at training camp
Entering training camp, everyone, including Pete Werner, knew he needed a strong training camp. With Willie Gay signed this offseason, Werner and Gay are competing to be the second linebacker on the field with Demario Davis in two-linebacker sets. While Gay has been impressive in his first offseason with the Saints, Werner has been prepared to match up.
Since the start of training camp, Pete Werner has been flying around defensively, making plays all over the field. That’s exactly what Werner needed to do in the face of competition, especially considering he’s coming off what can be considered a down year.
Mason Tipton has turned heads at training camp
The early breakout star of training camp is undoubtedly wide receiver Mason Tipton. The undrafted rookie has found a way to make big plays every day, making sure his name is known. While the Saints have a lot of camp left, including three preseason games, Tipton has a pretty good chance to make the team if he can keep doing what he’s been doing.
New Orleans has a pretty good history with undrafted players, especially wide receivers. Most recently, Rashid Shaheed went from an undrafted signee to a Pro Bowl and All-Pro player with the team. Now, entering his third season, he’s the team’s No. 2 receiver.
Mason Tipton hopes to follow in those footsteps.
