Saints extend explosive receiver and returner Rashid Shaheed ahead of training camp
The New Orleans Saints are scheduled to start training camp practices on Wednesday, but the team decided to take care of some business before then. On Saturday, it was reported that New Orleans signed Rashid Shaheed to a contract extension.
Shaheed, a receiver and returner, was already under contract for the 2024 season, so New Orleans worked ahead of schedule and extended him through the 2025 season, preventing him from being an Exclusive Rights Free Agent next offseason.
The one-year extension is worth $5.2 million.
Saints sign Rashid Shaheed to a one-year, $5.2 million extension
Shaheed signed with New Orleans after going undrafted in 2022, and that’s why his contract is structured one year at a time. However, he represents one of the best deals in the NFL, because he has been incredibly productive for the Saints since entering the NFL.
As a rookie, Shaheed caught 28 passes for 488 yards and two touchdowns, while also running the ball four times for 57 yards and another touchdown. However, his biggest impact came in the return game, amassing 513 return yards between punt and kick return.
In year two, he improved those numbers to 723 total return yards, and a punt-return touchdown. Those numbers earned him an invite to the Pro Bowl and made him an All-Pro returner. He also became New Orleans’ second-most productive receiver in 2023, catching 46 passes for 719 yards and five touchdowns.
Now, entering 2024, Shaheed is expected to be the WR2 for the Saints, making up a promising young duo with Chris Olave. All signs point towards Shaheed making another big leap this season and becoming a consistent force for New Orleans. With that in mind, the franchise made sure he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
