Saints add another veteran to their quarterback room, intensifying backup competition
The New Orleans Saints haven’t made many splash signings this free agency, but they have made a ton of depth signings. That continued on Friday when the Saints signed wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown and quarterback Kellen Mond. Both veterans can be considered depth signings that will compete for their spots on the depth chart.
Mond is now the second quarterback New Orleans signed this offseason. One of the team’s earliest free agency moves was signing Nathan Peterman. The Peterman signing definitely didn’t thrill fans, but there’s a belief that he could be an extension of the coaching staff because of his history with new quarterback coach Andrew Janocko. Either way, the Saints need a backup for Derek Carr after losing Jameis Winston to the Cleveland Browns, and Mond could possibly fill that role.
Saints sign quarterback Kellen Mond
Kellen Mond was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He got to spend that year with New Orleans’ offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who was the offensive coordinator in Minnesota that year. Unfortunately, Mond was waived by the Vikings going into his second season.
He ended up being claimed by the Cleveland Browns, then was released a year later. After that, he spent time on the practice squad of the Indianapolis Colts, and now, he’s in New Orleans with the Saints. Throughout all of that bouncing around, Mond has only appeared in one regular season game. That was in 2021 with the Vikings. In the game, he only attempted three passes, completing two for five yards.
Mond is now in a room with Derek Carr, Nathan Peterman, and Jake Haener. Carr is obviously the unquestioned starter, but New Orleans doesn’t have a clear QB2 like they did with Jameis Winston on the roster. That will be figured out throughout the offseason and training camp.
