Saints add two veteran offensive linemen as they try to get group figured out in camp
After a week of training camp, the New Orleans Saints have made some changes to arguably their most important position group: the offensive line. The team has waived a lineman, placed another on injured reserve, and signed two veterans to join the team.
Mark Evans II, who signed with New Orleans as an undrafted free agent in 2023, was waived. After a year on the practice squad, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff alum didn’t make it through his second camp.
Veteran tackle Justin Herron signed with the Saints back in April but a knee injury in practice on Wednesday landed him on injured reserve.
With Evans and Herron now out of the equation, New Orleans turned to the free agent market to replace them. On Sunday, it was announced that the team signed veterans Tremayne Anchrum Jr. and Jesse Davis.
Saints add Tremayne Anchrum Jr. and Jesse Davis
Anchrum Jr. is a guard who was drafted in the seventh round of the 2020 Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. In three seasons with the Rams, Anchrum appeared in 31 regular season games, starting just one. He initially signed with the Seattle Seahawks this offseason but was released a few days before New Orleans signed him.
Jesse Davis, on the other hand, has been in the league much longer. Signing with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent back in 2015, he has spent time with Seattle, the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, and now, the New Orleans Saints.
However, of the six teams he was on prior to the Saints, he only made two active rosters— the Dolphins and Steelers. Throughout his years, Davis appeared in 95 total games, starting 72.
These players aren’t explosive signings, and they aren’t even expected to start, however, they could be important depth pieces. The Saints offensive line will be under a microscope all throughout camp and during the season.
