4 Saints players in danger of losing a roster spot in final preseason game
By Ryan Heckman
4. Ryan Connelly, LB
Maybe one of the most confusing positions on this Saints roster is at linebacker. It is one of the toughest to project, right now, and could go one of several ways when it's all said and done. Most would agree that the locks, here, are Demario Davis, Pete Werner and D'Marco Jackson. From there, the Saints could choose to keep five, six or even a total of seven at this spot as they have in the past.
The question remains, who gets those remaining spots? It would seem tough for the team to move on from Zack Baun after moving up to get him a couple years back, so I would give him the benefit of the doubt and give him the fourth spot right now.
From there, it would be between Nephi Sewell, Jaylon Smith and Ryan Connelly to fill out the remaining spot(s). Since coming in, Smith has performed well and looks deserving of a roster spot. Both Sewell and Connelly are going to be playing a lot of special teams if they make the squad, and that's where these two are going to have to play well in the final preseason game.
Connelly was a fifth-round pick by the Giants back in 2019 and has since played three years for the Vikings before joining New Orleans this year, back in January.
