Saints would be wise to go after this handsome quarterback in offseason
The New Orleans Saints should be in the quarterback market. Fortunately for the Saints, this is the perfect year to be in it given one option in particular.
The quarterback market has been on something of an unprecedented heater the couple of offseasons.. Whether it be big-name draft prospects, or big-name veterans available to sign or trade, we really haven't seen anything like it. While the New Orleans Saints haven't found a quality starter yet since the retirement of Drew Brees, the Saints are still in prime position to upgrade from Andy Dalton/Jameis Winston, and there is one option that makes the most sense.
Even with the Sean Payton trade, the Saints will be picking at the end of the first round, and unless there is a drastic slip, it may be hard for them to move up and snag a first-round talent. With that said, while they do have more draft capital than they did a few days ago, it also may be hard to trade for someone like Derek Carr or, rather unfortunately, Lamar Jackson. Aaron Rodgers is also off the table, since the Green Bay Packers have stated that they would not trade him to an NFC team.
That leaves one option for the Saints, and it'd be a great fit.
The Saints should absolutely try and sign Jimmy Garoppolo. The San Francisco 49ers have stated that they can't see a scenario where he's back with them, pretty much officially starting his journey as an unrestricted free agent. Due to him suffering yet another injury, whichever team signs him should be able to do so at a discount.
Speaking of his injuries, while yes they are a concern, the last time he was healthy through the playoffs his team made the NFC Championship. The time before that, Super Bowl LIV. Coincidentally, that same year he had arguably the best game of his career in New Orleans. While yes, a lot of that was the talent around him, but fortunately the Saints have a similar roster makeup with talent aplenty where the quarterback wouldn't necessarily have to do as much. Should he get hurt, the Saints have solid options as backups.
A lot can change between now and the kickoff of the 2023 NFL season, as the New Orleans Saints have learned in the last couple of days. Bringing Jimmy Garoppolo to the bayou is an option they should certainly kick the tires on at the very least.
