The New Orleans Saints will be squaring off against another backup quarterback when they take on the Chicago Bears, in what could be big for the Saints defense.

It's honestly crazy how the NFL season can warp your sense of time. In week seven, Tyson Bagent became the talk of the league when hye filled in amicably for an injured Justin Fields with the Chicago Bears. After getting beat by the Los Angeles Chargers in week eight in front of a national audience on Sunday night football, he became yesterday's news. Now in week nine, he will get another start when the Bears take on the New Orleans Saints. This has a CHANCE to be a get-right game for the defense of the Saints.

This isn't a knock on Bagent. The former division II signal-caller has actually played his role with great aplomb all things considered. It's just that the Saints defense seems to be wearing the effects of having to carry the team throughout the year the last couple weeks, and an opposing rookie backup quarterback may be just what the doctor ordered.

Sure, Gardner Minshew had himself a day when the Saints played the Indianapolis Colts a week ago, but he did the same thing against the Cleveland Browns defense a week prior, so maybe he just has a habit against elite defenses.

With the offense of the Saints looking like it's FINALLY (at least starting to) look like it's clicking thanks to the offensive line slowly improving, the defense getting back up to snuff could launch this team to new heights. They are already tied for the lead in the NFC South, so a playoff game in the Superdome is well within reach.

The 2023 season hasn't been what we thought it would be for the New Orleans Saints to this point. That said, the season is a sprint, not a marathon, and this team has a chance to pick up some speed.
