New veteran name has emerged to potentially be Saints new starting quarterback
While the New Orleans Saints have been linked to Derek Carr, a new name has emerged that Saints fans should watch out for that could be their next quarterback.
Things were looking up for New Orleans Saints fans who were hoping to see Derek Carr in a Saints uniform when he was on the trading block. After it came out that he wouldn't wave his no-trade clause and wished to become a free agent, those dreams got dashed a little bit. It's no secret that the Saints need an upgrade at the most important position, especially since a veteran is the most likely route they're going to travel, just based on their current makeup and previous history.
While Carr may or may not be the guy who ends up being the guy, there is another name that has been creeping in that the Saints may pull the trigger on, and the name of that guy is Baker Mayfield.
As reported by Albert Breer, he stated while bringing up the, admittedly solid points, that:
""Another quarterback to watch in free agency for New Orleans would be Baker Mayfield. The Saints staff was high on Mayfield ahead of the 2018 draft, and those old drat evals can definitely have an impact down the road with guys as they get older and hit free agency, especially when there's a need that can be tied to it.""
- Albert Breer
It's pretty tough to argue with that logic. Sure, Mayfield may not be the most exciting choice, but depending on who you ask, Carr may not be either. That said, it's tough to deny that Mayfield showed flashes with the Los Angeles Rams last year, a year that was pretty much hopeless for the then-defending champions. Plus, Mayfield has also showed that, with the right situation and talent/culture around him, he can do enough for his team to succeed and thrive.
When it comes to this potential marriage, the New Orleans Saints certainly check all of the boxes. It'll be interesting to see how the dominoes of the NFL offseason fall, and how fans react to the result.
