Jamaal Williams could be in line for a big debut for Saints
The new starting running back for the New Orleans Saints could see a healthy workload in his Saints debut to kick off the 2023 NFL regular season.
Other than the obvious Derek Carr, the big "splash" signing for the New Orleans Saints this offseason was running back Jamaal Williams. With the suspension of star back Alvin Kamara still looming at the time, it was a slam-dunk signing for the Saints.
We now know that the Saints will be without the services of Kamara for the first three games of the regular season. Williams, a man who scored an NFL-leading 17 touchdowns a season ago for the Detroit Lions, should be more than capable of handling that load. Plus, when Kamara is slated to return, he is almost an ideal fit to serve in the Mark Ingram role opposite Kamara.
Even with Dennis Allen as the head honcho in place of Sean Payton, we can still expect Saints running backs to get healthy workloads. This favors Williams, who should find himself plenty busy when the Saints finally take the field against the Tennessee Titans opening week. The fact that he passes the vibes check is just an added bonus.
Another reason has to do with Kendre Miller and the Saints.
Miller was selected by the Saints in the third round of this year's draft out of TCU. It was easy to see why, as his bruising running style was the perfect compliment to what the Saints already had in the running back room.
However, Miller now finds himself back on the Saints' injury report the week of the first game. Even if Miller does play, it may be in a limited role, to make sure he doesn't further aggravate any potential ailments. As such, the rushing touchdown king from a year ago should hear his number called early and often for the Saints.
Gosh it feels good to be back on this grind again leading up to Saints games. We are less than a week away from finding out what the 2023 New Orleans Saints will look like, but one thing we can count on, is that it will feature a lot of Jamaal Williams to start off.
