The XFL is set to return in the spring of 2023 and a former New Orleans Saints running back heard his name called with the first pick of the offensive skills round of the XFL Draft.

Abram Smith, who never took a regular-season snap as a Saint, was signed as an undrafted free agent after a stellar 2021 season at Baylor. Smith rushed for 1,601 yards and 12 touchdowns that year and it was a little surprising that he didn't get drafted into the NFL.

The Saints saw the talent, however, and brought him in following the draft. He competed with Dwayne Washington and Tony Jones Jr. for a spot on the roster but didn't make the 53-man roster.

Despite their issues running the ball this season and the injury to Mark Ingram, Smith was never given a chance in the Big Easy. Alvin Kamara has been hit or miss but it feels like it's been more of a playcalling and offensive line issue than it has been a Kamara issue. The Saints often fall behind early too, making it more difficult for them to stick to the run.

Smith heard his name called by the D.C. Defenders and will now try to make a positive impression in one of the two spring football leagues. If Smith plays well, perhaps he gets another shot in the NFL but who knows if the Saints would end up bringing him back.
