While the NFL Draft is always about all of the rookies that are being welcomed into the NFL, the draft typically has repercussions for veterans. Depending on which rookies are selected, certain veterans can be pushed out the door, or find themselves in a battle where they are fighting for their job or starting spot.

This was recently on display with the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans landed quarterback Spencer Rattler in the fifth round of the draft, something no one saw coming, and the selection is already reshaping the team’s roster. On Wednesday, it was announced that the Saints released veteran quarterback Kellen Mond— one quarterback in, one quarterback out.

That puts an end to an incredibly short stint with the team. Mond signed with New Orleans on April 12. Not even a full month later, he’s no longer with the team. With Derek Carr, Jake Haener, and Nathan Peterman on the roster, Mond making the final 53-man roster was always going to be a long shot. The selection of Rattler eliminated any remaining chances.

Kellen Mond will now start the journey of finding his fifth NFL team. After being drafted in the third round of the 2021 Draft. Mond has been apart of the Minnesota Vikings, the Cleveland Browns, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Saints. While he is well traveled, he doesn’t have a ton of experience, appearing in just one regular season game back when he was a rookie.

Meanwhile, in New Orleans, the Saints will enter the next phase of the offseason with four quarterbacks: Derek Carr, Jake Haener, Nathan Peterman, and Spencer Rattler. The team will likely only carry two or three quarterbacks into the season, so the three QBs not named Derek Carr will be competing for the final spots on the roster.
