Demario Davis set up to retire with Saints after signing a new deal with New Orleans
In order for the New Orleans Saints to get under the salary cap, everyone knew the Saints would have to do something about Demario Davis’ contract. The linebacker was set to enter the final year of his contract with a cap hit higher than $18 million. Now that free agency has arrived, that’s no longer the case.
Adam Schefter reported that Davis and the Saints reworked the final season of his deal, replacing it with two-year deal worth $17.25 million, with $13.25 million guaranteed. As Schefter stated, the deal gives the 35-year-old linebacker a chance to retire with New Orleans.
Demario Davis gets new two-year deal with Saints
Davis was set to be a free agent in 2025, but that’ll now be postponed to 2026 with the new contract. Davis is a key leader in New Orleans, but he’s also still playing elite football for the Saints. In 2023, Davis started all 17 games for New Orleans, recording 121 tackles, 12 for a loss, and 6.5 sacks. He also made his second-straight Pro Bowl.
Demario Davis started his career with the New York Jets, playing his first four years with them, before going to the Cleveland Browns in 2016. After a year in Cleveland, Davis was traded back to the Jets and played with them for another season. In 2018 free agency, he joined the Saints and hasn’t looked back since.
Over the last six seasons, Davis has become a big member of the team and community, while also playing some of the best football of his career. In 2019, his second season with the Saints, Davis was named First-Team All-Pro. Over the last four seasons, Davis has been named Second-Team All-Pro in each season from 2020 to 2023.
Now, he’ll continue his career with the Saints, and likely end it in New Orleans. Over the next two seasons, Demario Davis will be focused on helping the Saints get back to the top.
