Alvin Kamara already sounds like he's checked out on the Saints this season
By Ryan Heckman
For a few months now, the New Orleans Saints have quietly had their own contract situation amidst many other notable disputes having gone on around the league.
Veteran running back Alvin Kamara made it known that he wanted a new contract earlier in the offseason. Kamara opened up about it, then, stating his desire for a new contract was all about being able to retire in New Orleans.
Despite not having secured that new deal, Kamara indeed reported to training camp and went through his offseason per normal.
Fast forward to present day, and Kamara still doesn't have that new contract. And in reference to his longing to retire a Saint, that may not be on the table for the eighth-year pro. Kamara was recently asked about his contract situation, again, and seemed to be completely over any talks of a new deal.
"It's too late for contract talk ... I don't wanna talk about it," Kamara said initially.
He was then asked about his New Orleans home going up for sale to which he poked fun at and made light of the situation. But, the media members in attendance wanted to know if his selling that home meant he was on his way out of New Orleans; if it was all part of his plan now that he doesn't have a new deal in place.
"I wouldn't say I had an exact plan," Kamara said. "But I'm pretty intentional when it comes to those moves ... I got other properties around the city too. So, if I sell it today I got somewhere to be."
The manner in which Kamara was able to talk in jest and so lighthearted, while being an NFL player who is unhappy with his contract situation, shed some light on the topic at hand. Clearly, he's over it all. He seems done worrying about retiring a Saint. Instead, focusing on being a "serial entrepreneur," in his own words, looks to be a focus.
This is a player who knows he is in his final season with the Saints, and the organization doesn't exactly have a plan going forward.
The Saints have zero plan at running back beyond Alvin Kamara
We have touched on this recently, but if something were to happen with Kamara's health, this team is completely out of luck.
And, forget the 2024 season. New Orleans might have to totally revamp their running back room in 2025. If the plan, all along, is for this to be Kamara's last season with the team, then they're going to need a new plan shortly.
Jamaal Williams is still the current backup, but his best days are far behind him. Jordan. Mims is next on the depth chart, and the 2023 undrafted free agent has yet to do anything of merit.
Kendre Miller cannot stay on the field. We know this much.
The Saints truly do not have a plan at running back, beyond Kamara. So, while this team still has a diversely-talented back starting for them, right now, they're one injury away from looking like arguably the worst back field in the entire NFL.
