5 players the Saints missed out on to draft Trevor Penning
Christian Watson
Fifteen selections after Penning's name was called by the Saints, the Green Bay Packers added Christian Watson to their wide receiver room. The Saints had spent their other first-round pick on Chris Olave, which has proven to be a smart decision, but not many people would have been upset if they had taken another receiver this early.
Watson, who might have had some question marks surrounding him in the draft due to hailing from North Dakota State, had a nice rookie year and follow-up season. His rookie year saw him play in 14 games and total 41 receptions for 611 yards and seven touchdowns. Having a red zone target like Watson would have been huge for the Saints offense, especially this past season with how much they struggled there.
In 2023, Watson missed time and only played in nine games but he still put together a decent season, catching 23 passes for 422 yards and five touchdowns. For what it's worth, both Rashid Shaheed and Chris Olave had five touchdowns this past season so just imagine how much better the offense might have been with Watson as part of the WR corps as well.
