4 possible backup quarterbacks for the Saints in 2024
2. Jake Haener
Jake Haener is an in-house candidate to be the backup quarterback next year. The Saints drafted him last year in the fourth round from Fresno State. He didn’t get any playing time in the regular season but in the preseason, he looked solid and showed flashes of being a good quarterback.
Haener was suspended for six games this past season for violating the league’s PED policy, and that could have hurt his development. If he continues to grow and get comfortable in the Saints new system, he could be an extremely cheap, and productive backup quarterback.
1. Sam Darnold
This name may not be very appealing to a lot of Saints fans but it would be a good option. First-year offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, is coming in from the San Francisco 49ers, where Sam Darnold plays. Darnold already knows the system that the Saints will most likely be running very well. It wouldn’t take a lot for him to get situated. He could also help other players get a better grasp on the system. This would make the offense not only function sooner but also better.
Darnold brings experience with him. He was drafted third overall in the 2018 draft and has played in 66 total games in his career. He would be a serviceable quarterback behind Carr whose main role would be to help teach the offense.
