The New Orleans Saints have made it clear that they’ll be going into next season with Derek Carr as their starting quarterback. After a polarizing first year with the team, where Carr started all 17 games as New Orleans went 9-8, the Saints are hoping that Klint Kubiak and the new offensive staff can get more out of Carr and the offense.

Even with Carr set as QB1, determining his backup will still be important. The backup quarterback position is discussed little but is often a needed position to be successful. All it takes is a singular play for Derek Carr to go down, and then the backup is sprung into action.

With New Orleans’ QB2 being wide open right now, here are four options, for the Saints, to back up Derek Carr next season.

1. Drafting a late-round quarterback

This option is similar to what the Saints did with Jake Haener last year. It’s likely that the Saints will take another late-round quarterback. Multiple options could make a lot of sense for New Orleans. The team could draft someone like Joe Milton who needs a lot of development but has flashed extremely high potential. The Saints could also go with someone such as Sam Hartman, who has lots of college experience and could guide an offense.

There are other options as well but those are just the two that jumped out to me. This would be a solid option for the Saints to find a backup quarterback, that could also possibly be the quarterback of the future.
