The New Orleans Saints play their second preseason game of the year on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. Coming off a 16-14 win in Week 1 of the preseason, New Orleans is hoping to continue that momentum. More importantly, since it’s just the preseason, players will be focused ion improving their performances.

There are multiple storylines happening that will make the game an interesting watch, particularly on the offensive side. Here are three things to watch the Saints for in their matchup against the 49ers.

1. How does Trevor Penning hold up?

This is the most pressing question for Saints fans currently. Trevor Penning has not looked playable so far this offseason. It’s irrational to expect him to play a perfect game on Sunday, but if he shows improvement, it will be a massive success.

Penning is arguably one of the most important players on the roster this year. If he plays well, he would elevate this Saints offense, leading to wins. However, if he flounders it could lead to the downfall of the season. It’s imperative the Saints give Derek Carr time to work. Trevor Penning needs to show improvement this week to give coaches and fans trust that he will provide.

2. The backup QB battle

The backup quarterback battle is going to continue being a storyline throughout the preseason. Fans are going to be interested and excited when there is a player such as Spencer Rattler competing. Although the media may favor him, it appears that Jake Haener is still the front-runner for the position. That is not Rattler’s fault at all, he has played great. Haener has done a great job protecting his spot. His last preseason game showed that he is a formidable option at quarterback.

3. How does the first string offense look?

The first string offense has been ridiculed ever since failing to put up any points against the Cardinals defense. They shouldn’t be expected to run the offense to perfection right away, however, it would be nice to see improvement this week.

Protecting Derek Carr and getting him in rhythm would give fans much more confidence going into the season. Scoring will be no easy task, as the San Francisco defense is a fierce one that should put up a good challenge.

The Saints have set up some interesting storylines heading into their preseason matchup against the 49ers. Fans are going to be watching the offense like a hawk, it is paramount that they show some success. Regardless of if they do, Saints fans should be interested with the storylines available.
