The New Orleans Saints were brought back down to earth in Week 3, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles 15-12. After two dominant wins to start the season, the Saints were drawing comparisons to the 2009 Super Bowl team, and fans were ready to buy their tickets for Super Bowl 59.

Of course, that was an overreaction to two wins, but fandom operates in the extremes. That means it’s now time to overreact to the ugly Week 3 loss. Here are three things fans could be thinking after witnessing Sunday’s game.

3. Saints can’t win close games

Sunday’s loss to the Eagles definitely gave fans unpleasant flashbacks to last season, when New Orleans was 3-6 in one-score games. The Saints finished last year 9-8, a game shy of the playoffs. It’s easy for fans to say if the team was more clutch, the season would’ve been completely different.

Now, in the first close game of the 2024 season, New Orleans found a way to lose. Scoring over 40 points and winning in blowouts is fun, but those games are rare in the NFL. The good teams in this league pull out close games. Until New Orleans proves it can consistently do that, the team isn’t going far.

2. The Saints offense tricked us

47 points in Week 1 and 44 points in Week 2 had New Orleans being compared to the Greatest Show on Turf. Through the firsts two weeks, the Saints were playing like the defense wasn’t even on the field. Obviously, that had to stop at some point, but the assumption was New Orleans would settle down with at least a decent offensive game, scoring at least 20 points or so.

Instead, the Saints were absolutely dominated by the Eagles, scoring only 12 points, one touchdown and two field goals. Now, fans are left wondering if what we saw in the first two weeks was real.

1. Saints are still the same team they were last season

The scores from the first two weeks of the season had this Saints team being compared to the 2009 team. After the Week 3 loss, the team is being compared to last year’s team. New Orleans started the 2023 season off 2-0, then lost in Week 3. Could this season collapse just like last year’s did?

On Sunday, New Orleans certainly played a lot like they did a year ago, with an inconsistent offense, bad run defense, and losing a close game. The Saints will have to prove they’re a different team in Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons.
