The New Orleans Saints drafted quarterback Spencer Rattler in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, making him the first quarterback to go off the board since six signal-callers went in the first round. Rattler was once though to be the next Oklahoma quarterback to win a Heisman Trophy and go number one overall but the rest of his 2021 season didn't go well and he transferred following that season.

Rattler finished his college career at South Carolina, throwing for 3,186 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight picks in 2023 for the Gamecocks. Rattler gives the Saints another quarterback to sit behind Derek Carr and he'll have a chance to fight for the backup spot this summer.

What grade do the Saints deserve for Spencer Rattler selection?

The NFL is a quarterback-run league so if the Saints feel like Rattler can be their signal-caller of the future, why not give him a chance to show what he can do? He'll have to battle for the backup quarterback job with Jake Haener, who the Saints just spent a Day 3 pick on a year ago but let the two go at it and see who comes out the winner.

I have no problem with New Orleans taking a gamble on yet another quarterback. I'll give them a B- for this pick because he won't be contributing to the team this year (or at least he shouldn't be unless Derek Carr gets injured) but he could help them win down the road.
