Trevor Penning

Trevor Penning is also a recent first-round pick by the Saints who has not panned out. Unlike Turner who is fine when he's on the field but just isn't healthy, Penning hasn't been good when he's been given an opportunity to play.

As a rookie, Penning played in just six games with only 124 snaps under his belt due to injury. Fans hoped that the Northern Iowa product would slide into the starting left tackle role and be able to hold his own after a year of learning but that's not how things went.

The Saints benched Penning after just five games due to poor play and he barely played after that. According to PFF, he played just 417 snaps and during that time gave up four sacks and was penalized seven times. That's not good for any player but it's particularly bad for a first-round pick.

As is the case with Turner, the Saints don't have anything to gain by cutting Penning so he'll likely be on the team next year. That being said, if he's a starter at any point during the season, that's not good for Derek Carr or whoever is taking the snaps for the Saints. Fans would certainly not miss Trevor Penning if he wasn't on the team in 2024.
