The New Orleans Saints waived Jake Haener, so Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler as the only quarterbacks left on the roster. The Saints have typically kept three quarterbacks on their roster. This would give the Saints room to add a veteran quarterback. Unfortunately, it's time to put the hopes of Jameis Winston returning to New Orleans to bed after he made the Giants 53-man roster.
The team has been adamant that they don't need a veteran quarterback on the team. They were also adamant about not needing a big bodied wide receiver, then they went and traded for Devaughn Vele. If the opportunity presents itself, the Saints could easily bring in a more seasoned quarterback.
The timing of the move would also derail any talks of the new addition pushing for a starting role. You aren't picking up any guys who fit that mold via waivers. While you can't get Jameis, can I interest you in Easton Stick?
Sorry, No Jameis Winston reunion for the Saints
Winston has been the quarterback many fans have clamored for since the beginning of the offseason. The idea of getting a veteran quarterback isn't new. Saints fans originally wanted a veteran quarterback to come in and start the season before eventually being usurped by Shough.
It was Winston who was pitched to be that guy. This was mostly emotional as there's a large part of the fan base that wonders if Winston could have succeeded as the full time quarterback for the Saints during his first stint with the team. Even after leaving, Winston has remained a fan favorite.
Easton Stick may be the better choice due to history with Kellen Moore
As beloved as Winston is, Stick may actually be better suited for the role. It would be a different story if starting was on the table, but as a purely backup quarterback Stick has one clear advantage. He played for Moore in 2023, and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Stick "drew interest from" the Saints this offseason .
It's actually the only time that Stick started any games. After Justin Herbert went out with an injury, Stick filled in for four games. Granted, he didn't win any of those games, but that means he'd fit right in. No one in the Saints quarterback room has won any games.
Stick's experience within Moore's offense gives him the ability to step in immediately and already have a grasp of the offense. If you're worried about outside noise, you'll never have to worry about the fan base chanting for Stick to start. If the Saints are interested in investing in a backup quarterback, Stick could be the man for the job.
