The New Orleans Saints are running very thin at left guard due to injuries.  It is crucial that Trevor Penning returns, after suffering a turf toe injury in the preseason opener.  His return to the offensive line is needed and his presence could help stabilize a unit that has struggled early in the season.

Dillon Radunz will also miss time with a toe injury. Kellen Moore said Radunz won't be going on injured reserve. That's a good thing, but it also probably means he'll miss some time. That's an odd thing to say about someone who won't miss any games.

The offensive line causes major concern as they prepare to face a hungry pass rush riding strong momentum into a hostile environment.  If the Saints are unable to protect the edge, it could be a long day for the offense.

Saints cling to hope for Trevor Penning’s return

Trevor Penning was a full time starter for the squad in 2024, appearing in all 17 contests.  His durability and physical presence made a strong impact in the run game, finishing with a 70.1 run blocking grade.  However, his pass protection was a concern, as he finished with a 51.6 grade in that area.  Despite some inconsistencies in pass protection, the Saints are optimistic about his potential and development for the 2025 season as he moves to left guard.

Penning's return is crucial for the team, if he is unable to suit up Sunday, the Saints will be forced to rely on their third string left guard, which is a troubling scenario for a unit that has shown signs of struggle and inconsistency to start the season.  This type of vulnerability could become a game changing liability against a Seahawks front line that is clicking on all cylinders.

Seahawks defensive front could exploit Saints offensive woes

The biggest strength of the Seahawks defense has been stopping the run, they’ve allowed only 3.5 yards per carry in their first two contests.  For the Saints, establishing the run will be crucial, not only to control tempo, but to keep pressure off of the offensive line that is struggling with injuries.

The Seahawks pass rush has begun to wake up, they are coming off of a dominant outing in their 31-17 week 2 victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Their defensive line kept Aaron Rodgers’s under duress all game, without blitzing much.

They were able to generate pressure on 40% of Rodgers drop backs whenever they rushed with four or fewer defenders.  This shall raise concerns for the Saints as they continue to work through their injury issues.
