When veteran defensive end Payton Turner signed with the Dallas Cowboys in free agency, New Orleans Saints fans were happy, because an unfortunate experience had finally ended. Turner was selected by the Saints in the first round of the 2021 Draft, but never lived up to the expectations that accompany a first-round selection. For that reason, fans were glad his chapter with the team came to an end.

Turns out, Turner is happy as well. The defensive end knew he needed a fresh start, and he believes he landed with a team that will set him up to be more productive than New Orleans did. He made that clear during his introductory press conference with the Cowboys, as he detailed the scheme difference between the two teams, and how Dallas’ defensive scheme better suits his skill set.

"In New Orleans, where I see the difference is … this defense with coach Eberflus is a lot about penetrating and getting vertical and then react. As opposed to New Orleans, we [were] really detailed with our technique as far as you need to hold this gap. It wasn't so much about getting knockback, getting vertical. They both have their advantages, they're both different. I'm excited to switch it up a little bit and get back to get off the ball and set the edge vertically and getting back to it… Those are three things that I really enjoy doing, that I can highlight in my game with the Cowboys."

Payton Turner believes he can shine in Cowboys defense

Saints fans may initially take this as a shot, and want to go after Turner, but he kept it respectful and football. Scheme differences are real, and for a lot of players, circumstances are important. Saints fans know that after seeing Zack Baun leave New Orleans’ bench and becoming one of the best defenders in the league with the Philadelphia Eagles.

It’d certainly be surprising if Turner has an emergence similar to Baun’s, but he probably will see an increase in production with Dallas. Of course, that hinges on him staying healthy, which was his biggest issue with the Saints. Turner only played in 15 games over his first three seasons, as numerous injuries kept him on the sideline.

In 2024, Turner finally put together a full season, playing 16 games, and recording two sacks and 21 tackles. Now, he’s in a situation he believes he really can shine in.
