Countless teams around the NFL have tried to emulate Taysom Hill’s impact for the New Orleans Saints, with no luck thus far. However, that hasn’t stopped the Carolina Panthers, who are attempting to find a potential prospect with the addition of undrafted free agent Heinrich Haarberg.
Hill isn’t the most flashy player, but his versatility to line up as a quarterback, running back, fullback, wide receiver, tight end, and on special teams makes him a valuable contributor. Because of this, his unpredictability forces the defense to be ready for anything, rather than keying in on a specific play. Additionally, he helps free up roster spots, as he fills multiple roles.
As a result, teams have tried to find the next Taysom Hill ever since he burst onto the national spotlight in 2018. Unfortunately for them, he’s a rare breed. It’s challenging to find someone not only with his physical ability, but also his willingness to play whatever role and IQ.
Heinrich Haarberg is the closest Taysom Hill archetype we’ve seen in recent years.
On paper, Haarberg and Hill are eerily similar. Both played quarterback for a majority of their collegiate career and eventually transitioned to tight end (Haarberg last year and Hill in 2022). Beyond that, they have similar play styles and athletic profiles, which is what makes him an enticing prospect for the Panthers.
Haarberg posted a 9.55 relative athletic score this offseason with an impressive 4.55 40-yard dash and 38” vertical jump. The six-foot-four, 237-pound tight end is a receiving threat, but makes his presence known with his legs. He’s shown the ability to line up in the backfield and fight for the tough yards.
Similar to Hill, Haarberg has embraced the “chess piece” role and is willing to play any spot the coach asks. He’s seen snaps as a receiver, in the backfield, and on special teams.
Obviously, it’s still unlikely that Haarberg will reach Hill’s level. However, he’s the closest to him that the NFL has seen. Saints fans should keep an eye on the Panthers training camp and be prepared to face a Taysom Hill lookalike if he makes the roster.
