Derek Carr shocked the NFL world with his recent announcement that he was retiring from football. However, after a shoulder injury that could’ve required surgery for him to return, and would’ve resulted in him missing the 2025 season with the New Orleans Saints anyway, Carr felt it was the best decision for him and his family to hang up the cleats.
While social media never tells the full story, Carr seems to be adjusting well to the retired life. His wife, Heather, documented the former quarterback’s first day of retirement, and he seemed to be enjoying his newfound free time to spend with friends and family.

Derek Carr shares what his first day of retirement looks like
The day started with the former quarterback going outside in his yard to run with his children. He then went to lunch with his wife, before doing the thing that all retried athletes love to do: golf. Carr joked that he was going to make the tour. After golfing, Carr returned to his yard to throw around a baseball with his kids, then ate dinner with his family. The day ended with the former quarterback watering his garden before winding down with some video games.
The minute-long video officially marked Derek Carr’s transition from an NFL quarterback to a social media content creator. In all seriousness, this was likely just some family fun for the Carr family as Derek stats a new chapter of his life. After 11 seasons in the NFL, spread across two teams and three cities, Carr will have to adjust to a new lifestyle.
His career didn’t end the way he wanted in New Orleans, and barring a comeback, his final football play will be one he got injured on. However, he made a ton of money throughout his career, and was also a four-time Pro Bowler. Now it’s time for the next chapter of life.
