The New Orleans Saints have gone through a few phases during this NFL Draft process. There was the Jeremiyah Love era. The Travis Etienne signing pushed the Caleb Downs era into full force. There hasn’t been a hotter prospect than Jordyn Tyson in the last week or so, and it feels like he’s beginning to become a favorite amongst Saints fans.Â
Saints fans aren’t alone in their interest for Tyson. ESPN’s Peter Schrager listed who he believes the Saints are most likely to pick at 8, and Tyson tops the list. More interesting than that, Downs falls third in a three man list. In between Tyson and Downs is LSU corner Mansoor Delane.Â
You’ll hear a split between Downs and Tyson as fans’ dream picks. Don’t sleep on Delane, though. While it does feel like Tyson and Downs are at the top of the list, Delane could bring a lockdown corner into the mix. We all know just how valuable that is to a defense.
Caleb Downs vs Jordyn Tyson may come down to Kellen Moore vs Brandon Staley in the Saints war room
Let's narrow it to Tyson and Downs, because they've dominated the draft conversation. If there had to be an objective deciding factor, it would be positional value. The whole conversation around Downs has been that positional value is null in void. While he is good to make it irrelevant to him, it doesn't strip away the notion of positional value in comparison to other prospects.
Wide receiver will always be more valuable than safety/ STAR. If the prospects are close, it could be the determining factor. Honestly, it's difficult to argue who would have a bigger impact on the team. Tyson or Downs would instantly be splash players. If it isn't about positional value, it may be about who wins between Kellen Moore and Brandon Staley.
Moore is likely going to vie for the receiver help bolster Tyler Shough. He's the face of the franchise, and it's been a priority to build the supporting cast this offseason through free agency. Maybe that earlier work from free agency opens the door for Staley to make his case for Downs.
Downs would play one of the most impactful roles on the defense. He's also considered one of the safer, yet dynamic, picks in the draft. Last year, the Saints doubled up on offense in the first two rounds then paid the most attention to the offense in free agency. One could argue it's time to put defense in the forefront.
