NFL expert predicts a Drew Brees single-season record will be broken this season

Things haven't gone exactly as planned, this year, for the New Orleans Saints. Although, one might also argue that this is precisely what needed to happen.

Many fans had wanted Dennis Allen to be fired for quite some time now, and the current 7-game losing streak is what finally broke the camel's back. Allen is gone. Now, it looks like the Saints can start planning ahead and try to bring this franchise back to glory days.

Speaking of those glory days, it's been tough sledding since the retirement of Drew Brees. A quarterback like Brees rarely comes along, and Saints fans were spoiled for 15 excellent seasons. Now, it's about trying to find their next true, franchise passer. As likable as Derek Carr is, he isn't the long-term answer.

While Brees is now retired, the rest of the league features some quarterbacks also attempting to strive for some of the things he was able to accomplish. Over in Detroit, quarterback Jared Goff is actually on pace to break a record Brees set in a single season back in 2018.

And, one expert seems to believe Goff is, indeed, going to accomplish this feat.

Jared Goff is on pace to break Drew Brees' single-season completion percentage record

In a recent piece published by some NFL insiders and experts over at ESPN, Seth Wickersham made a bold prediction that says Goff will end up breaking Brees' single-season completion percentage record:

"Over the first five games, Goff's 83% competition percentage was an NFL record, according to ESPN Research (minimum 50 attempts). He leads the NFL with a 74.9% completion percentage, putting him on pace to eclipse Brees' 74.4% single-season mark set in 2018," Wickersham wrote.

More Saints news:

It's pretty sobering to think about the idea that Goff went from once being a cast-off with the Rams, to now flourishing under Ben Johnson and making the most of his opportunity in Detroit. To think he could break a record held by Brees is astonishing, but he can make it a reality at this pace.

"And Goff isn't showing any signs of slowing down," Wickersham went on. "He has completed 30 straight passes to his top target, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and can boost his numbers against the Colts and Jaguars (two struggling pass defenses) over the next three weeks."

What Goff is doing, this season, is nothing short of incredible. His career resurgence began as a nice, feel-good story, but he's been able to continue playing at a high level. Joining the conversation with someone like Brees and maybe, potentially, even winning a league MVP as some are predicting?

One word: wow.

What a turnaround that would be for a quarterback who was looked at as a "throw-in" on the Matthew Stafford deal, once upon a time.
