Just when you think you have the NFC South figured out, the division makes sure to keep you on your toes. Just a few weeks ago, the Atlanta Falcons were starting to run away with the division, while the other three teams were suffering embarrassing losses. Now, the Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are on losing streaks, and the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints are on winning streaks.
With seven weeks left in the season, a division that appeared to have a clear order is now wide open. Additionally, the Week 11 results led to a shakeup in division power rankings.
NFC South power rankings after Week 11
4. Carolina Panthers (3-7)
Previous ranking: 4
After picking up a win in Germany, the Carolina Panthers had a bye week in Week 11. When they return in Week 12 for a game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina will be trying to extend its win streak to three games. No one will give the Panthers a chance in this game, but that gives them an opportunity to make a statement .
3. Atlanta Falcons (6-5)
Previous ranking: 2
The Falcons squandered an opportunity to end the division race. With everyone ready to crown them after Week 9, Atlanta has since lost two straight games. Most recently, they were embarrassed by Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos, losing 38-6. Now, the Falcons have given hope to other teams in the NFC South that they can still win a division title.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-6)
Previous ranking: 1
Like the Panthers, the Buccaneers were also on a bye week in Week 11. They’re hoping the bye will help them get healthy and get out of whatever slump they’ve been in. Tampa has lost its last four games, but they’ve all been close games against quality opponents. However, this isn’t college football, losing good doesn’t get a team to the playoffs. The Bucs need to start pulling out these close games if they’re going to turn their season around.
1. New Orleans Saints (4-7)
Previous ranking: 3
It may be weird seeing the Saints at No. 1, but they’re the hottest team in the division right now. Additionally, they have as many wins as Tampa, and beat the Falcons two weeks ago. Since Darren Rizzi has taken over, this appears to be a different team.
New Orleans has a bye week in Week 12, but the team is hoping to return in Week 13 and keep the momentum rolling.
