Mid-Season 2025 Mock Draft: The Saints build up the trenches
5:146- Tez Johnson, WR, Oregon
It is imperative that the Saints improve their depth at receiver. This year has shown that outside of Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, they don’t have anyone who can step up and fill in for an injury. Because of that, I have them selecting Tez Johnson, the receiver out of Oregon.
Tez Johnson played three years at Troy before transferring to Oregon. In 2023 he burst onto the scene with 1,182 yards and 10 touchdowns. A majority of those yards (727) were after the catch, that is where Johnson thrives. After the catch, his elusiveness is on full display. Johnson can make defenders look silly as he uses one cut and takes off for a big play. This is a trait that New Orleans could really use offensively.
Johnson is a dynamic route runner. He contains the ability to create multiple yards of separation which makes him an easy target for the quarterback. This can be seen as Johnson has reeled in over 80% of his targets in both 2023 and 2024.
The biggest flaw in Johnson’s game is his size. He has a small, skinny frame standing at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Putting on a bit of weight could help prevent injury in the NFL. Johnson also has issues with separating from the opposing corner if they get their hands on him.
Even with the questions surrounding Tez Johnson’s frame on the next level, his ability to get yards after the catch is something that should outrule the concerns. Johnson should be a strong contender for the Saints to draft if he is available in the fifth round.
