You'd think the situation between Alvin Kamara and New Orleans Saints would be settled after the team didn't draft a running back. Mickey Loomis' reservation to answer questions about Kamara during a recent radio appearance suggests matters are anything but settled.
Loomis alluded to the situation needing some clarity going into the draft. He admitted the both sides would be impacted by what the Saints did during the draft. A week after the draft and there doesn't seem to be the clarity. It isn't that Loomis gave a negative update. It's the fact that he really said a whole bunch of nothing and didn't sound optimistic in his tone. It's the exact opposite of how he answered a question about Cam Jordan's future.

Saints may suddenly require Devin Neal to have a breakthrough
The Saints invested a lot into Travis Etienne this offseason, but Kamara not being on the team shouldn't suddenly heap more on his plate. The Saints should still opt for a two-back system to keep rushers fresh, and Devin Neal would be the natural next man up to pair with Etienne.
Kendre Miller's struggles to stay healthy throughout his career unfortunately make it irresponsible to count on him as a secondary option. The Saints have three headed monster potential, but making Miller a part of your plans is a gamble that'll keep fans holding their breath until the season is over.
Neal also ended the season on injured reserve, but this isn't a continuous issue for him like it's been for Miller. During his rookie season, Neal looked good in a limited capacity. He displayed smooth running, but he, like the other running backs on the roster, saw his efforts neutralized by poor blocking up front. Neal also showcased surprising ability in the backfield as a receiver and blocker.
Kamara and Etienne is the Saints running back duo in an ideal world. If that isn't the case, Neal has shown the potential to be a key contributor. All he needs to show is consistency when tasked with a slightly bigger sample size. Worst case scenario, the Saints add another running back next season. If Neal performs like he did as a rookie, however, that won't be necessary.
