After Cam Jordan made it clear that the talent the New Orleans Saints picked up over the weekend don't measure up to him, Mickey Loomis gave the most optimistic update on Jordan returning to the Saints. Loomis flat out stated the team and Jordan have had "good conversations." That's much more than he could say about Alvin Kamara.
Even still, it feels as if Jordan's future could go either way. One thing is clear, Loomis isn't shy about stating he would like for Jordan to return to the Saints. It's no hiding their cards on this one, but if there was any doubt, Loomis cleared it all up on Mad Dog Sports Radio.
"Cam has meant so much to our franchise. He's had just a great career. I'd be really excited if the Saints were the only team that he ever played for." #Saints GM Mickey Loomis tells @AdamSchein he hopes @camjordan94 is back with New Orleans ⤵ pic.twitter.com/ze1PweEoXB

Cam Jordan's future with the Saints feels impossible to predict
We're half a week removed from the end of the NFL Draft, and it feels like we're about a day and a half overdue for Jordan re-signing with the Saints. After the draft always felt like the point where both sides would check in to see where each other were at. The Saints picked up Tyree Wilson via trade and signed Anfernee Jennings. Jordan is still at home weighing his options.
With the acquisition of Wilson and Jennings, it does feel like the Saints are safeguarding themselves in case Jordan doesn't return. They kept five rushers on the roster last year, so there's room. However, adding Wilson and Jennings certainly gives the Saints a slight level of comfort they didn't have a week ago.
From merely looking at the roster, the door feels open. Loomis' words represent an open door and sounds like they're working towards something. Jordan's comments about the new Saints not producing like he has, on the other hand, feel a bit territorial. More passively stated, it sounded like a player making his value clear publicly.
If you heard Loomis speak, you'd think they were getting closer to a deal. Jordan's quote feels like they've made no progress. The assumed reason for the impasse prior to the draft was Jordan wanting to see what would happen in the draft. Now that we've seen it, it's clear the Saints still have a need for him. So, it begs the question of why isn't it done?
It's something still creating distance in the negotiation. Even with the distance, each side still feels like the other side's first choice. The longer the stalemate last, though, the harder it is to guess what will happen.
