Mason Tipton likely already had a roster spot, but his performance against the Chargers ensured it. Tipton proved that he can be a quality contributor behind the starters. He only had one reception, but that’s all he needed to show his potential.
Tipton’s only catch was a 54 yard touchdown from Tyler Shough. His route running was on full display, selling a double move that made the defender bite. His speed can be seen as well, running away from the cornerback and safety. Despite only being targeted three times, Tipton stood out as one of the biggest winners from the game. That play showed how he could impact the Saints offense.
Outside of Tipton, there wasn’t another stand out receiver. Kelvin Austin Jr. was the next closest player with four receptions for 42 yards. Austin also had a potential touchdown reception that Tyler Shough just barely overthrew down the right sideline. If he had completed that catch, he would likely be paired with Tipton in this conversation.
Mason Tipton needs to step up in 2025
He played in 11 games last year but was relatively unproductive with 14 receptions for 99 yards. This was disappointing as the receiving room was decimated with injuries. He had the opportunity, but couldn’t convert it into on field production. That needs to change this year.
Tipton likely enters this season fourth on the depth chart. Although unfortunate, he will probably move up higher due to injuries. Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed and Brandin Cooks have all dealt with injuries in their careers. It’s irrational to assume all three will be healthy this season. This makes it paramount that Tipton can step up and prove that he can be a reliable option.
Mason Tipton showed his potential in the Saints first preseason game against the Chargers. He only had one reception, but his skillset was shown on the 54 yard touchdown catch. Tipton needs to step up in 2025 and prove he can be a reliable option behind the starters.
