The vast majority of the New Orleans Saints front office and coaching staff were This alone is newsworthy, but what’s far more important is their interactions with prospects. The most notable was Mickey Loomis’ in-depth conversation with cornerback Mansoor Delane. Delane was already viewed as a potential option in round one, but is now seen as a favorite.

Delane’s stock is rising after an impressive pro-day where he ran a blazing 4.35 40-yard dash. His long speed was one of the biggest questions around him, which he answered on Monday. Because of this, he’s solidified his stock as the top cornerback in a majority of analysts' eyes.

Mansoor Delane would give Saints a true lockdown corner

Delane is a well-rounded prospect whose versatility, technique and athleticism make him a defensive coordinator's dream. He can line up everywhere on the field and eliminate a wide variety of receiver archetypes (contested catch X receiver, shifty slot, etc.).

While Delane has shown flashes in zone, his best work comes in man. His athleticism and footwork allow him to effortlessly mirror opposing receivers. This paired with his physicality makes it difficult for players to create separation. Even if they can make space, he has excellent recovery speed and quickly closes ground. He doesn’t panic while the ball is in the air and uses his receiver-esc skills to deny the pigskin from the opponent. This was a common theme during Delane’s career as he tallied eight interceptions and 18 pass breakups.

This selection would have the biggest ramifications on Quincy Riley. While he would still see meaningful snaps, the second-year player would be demoted to outside cornerback three. However, this could benefit the defense as Riley could shift his focus to the slot, where he has experience at. The Saints desperately need this role after Alontae Taylor left. Because of this, drafting Delane could fix multiple problems with one pick.

Overall, the interest in LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane is evident from the Saints front office. He has the potential to be a franchise cornerstone defensively. Delane’s well-worth considering at the eight-overall pick.
